If the OH lets me nick some of his pics of his cockers, would anyone be interested in seeing that side of the cockapoo?

Will go and trawl through his folders and see what he's got.........

Will dig some out then, probably tomorrow, as it means waking up the hamster to turn the wheel for the storage device thingamybobo upstairs, that I'll have to rummage through, but there's some good 'uns ;)

Managed to nick a few, will have a look for some more as I know there are some good ones, particularly one of his little black bitches retrieving a hare larger than her! Anyway, here's a few of cockers in training, and out doing the real thing ;)

There's a world of difference between a pet bun and one that lives wild ;)

I don't think I could eat a budgie, and yet the name budgerigar, is derived from the Australian aboriginal word meaning good eating!

They can be difficult to teach the retrieve, it's not always *natural* they're bred more for flushing game and some have the tendency to try and bury what they find.

I haven't had chance to look properly through your website I'm afraid :o the OH is very particular about the lines his cockers are from, the red bitch isn't his but belongs to a good friend who field trials, she's a cracking worker!

I can assure you, these cockers are very much loved, even the liver dog who has a habit of waking us up singing ;)

I've added a warning to my first post just in case people don't like seeing cockers doing what they're bred for. It's the best I can do as you can't edit/amend thread titles.

Chuckle, that tongue belongs to a little black bitch who's favourite past time is dragging herself through long grass with just her front legs, back legs trailing out behind her and making the most ridiculous howling noises, her nick name is 'the sssssccchhhnake'; the black dog in the last pic has been on the front cover of shooting gazette, he's one good looking cocker!

Just like my dogs Mam's
Like your explanation about the retrieve. Poppy tends to spite a tennis ball, had to train for Flyball with a rabbit ball and then ween her off it back to a tennis ball still spits the ball occasional but getting better.

Maybe a bit dumb Colin but what's a rabbit ball ? x

It's a ball covered with rabbit skin used to train gun dogs to pick up and carry fur. They are used in flyball to train soft mouthed dogs to hold onto a ball as they jump over the four jumps, some like Poppy don't bite down on the ball, only problem is getting it back off them. lol

HAPPY DOGS!!! thats what I see here, dogs love a job as well as being a pet of course:)
I often think that with the correct training some cockerpoos would make excellent gun/working dogs.Weller loves flushing out anything he can find and if he loses his ball he will criss cross a field nose down, tail wagging until he finds it, doing his best spaniel impression:D I have been involved in greyhounds for many years too and they LOVE racing, many people think this is cruel too but it is what they are bred for!!! They also make excellent coach potatoes:D Its my own opinion but a dog with a job is truely happy, I have know far too many working type dogs, that look nice, just an example border collie, that are expected to be happy just lazing around waiting for love and cuddles......and end up being frustrated, unhappy, snappy dogs, such a shame!!!!! Lovely photos:)

Olivers Mount, Scarborough on 7th Aug next weekend. It's our first proper competition. in starters so not to full on I hope, rules are not as strict so I can use the rabbit ball if she starts to play up.
But I'm in the division team at Drax, August bank holiday weekend, could be a baptism of fire for me, But Poppy just thinks its fun anyway.

Oh Wow! Fantastic photos - they really are stunning dogs!

I think Karen is right, dogs love to 'have a job' and be busy, they love to please us don't they? Well, most of the time! lol

I totally agree with what you are saying. I think we can be forgiven for forgetting our cute cuddly dogs parents are both working dog breeds.
Poppy brings back to hand a retrieve dummy better than she does a tennis ball, she flushes birds from cover and follows sent trails all day if you let her.
Rosie shows great promise, she's to small to pick up the retrieve dummy or tennis ball but she gets hold of them as best she can and try's to drag them to you. Looks so funny.
