Well I just made some liver cake - I had the dog at my feet drooling and trying to catch any spillages and when I took it out to leave it to cool my hubby walked in and said "Ooooooh that smells good - whats for tea?" :D

What does that say about my cooking?!!! :(

Helen put the recipe in cockapoo meets thread and I havent changed it honestly?! My hubby will eat anything going - good job he isn't on this forum! ;)
450g liver
450g self-raising flour
3 eggs
2 cloves of garlic
a little water or milk

Whisk eggs with an equal volume of water or milk, add liver and garlic and blend in food processor and then add flour and blend. If it's too dry add a little more water. Spread out on baking tray and bake at 180 for about 35 mins.

Thanks Sarah. Do you use lambs' liver?

I use lambs liver. There's hardly any difference in price. It costs about £1 and a batch lasts for weeks. Cut it up and freeze it.

I used a similar recipe but left out the garlic, as Rosie's tummy is so sensitive. She still loved it! It stuck like superglue to my baking tin though!

I use a baking sheet or foil to stop it sticking.

Yes and I put greaseproof paper in the tin - so no messy tin to clean :)

Glad I read this before making my batch - saved me scraping the tin! Will see what the kids and hubby think of the smell in our house:D

wish I had used a greased tin for mine:eek::mad::eek:

On the plus side Holly loves it and I know it is a healthy treat for her given her poorly tummy when I collected her. It freezes really well and a friend of mine gives it to her dog frozen as takes longer to eat.

Have just made it! The smell is OK, but I made hubby some liver and bacon casserole at the same time, so that probably masked the smell a bit - he usually only ever gets it from an M&S ready meal box! Izzy loves it. It os very dry, so maybe I over cooked it, but then I don't know what texture it should have. It has a lot of flour - feeding NI, which is a grain free diet, I guess you don't give a lot per day.

The nice thing is that it breaks easily so you can give really tiny pieces. I tend to use dried liver more often than liver cake because of the flour content, but Dylan seems to enjoy liver cake more.

haha i guy i used to know used to buying liver cake off my mum and started buying it for some people at college who had dogs, so he would hand it out in the car park. one day he left it in his car on the passengers seat(very hot day) someone must have walked past and called the police thinking it was drugs.

he got a messege to go to the office where their were two police men waiting for him, he had to take them to his car and give them his keys as he wasnt alowed to touch the car. they then went back the the college into a room and started asking him what it was and why he had it. he tried to tell them it was dogs treats but they wouldnt beleave him so the pored out the bags on the table (they had been in the car overnight and most of that morning, very hot day) the police men started picking it up and sniffing it saying he could have baked the liver in with the drugs (like hash brownies) to disguise the smell. lol they were eventualy satisfied and he had to bin the lot.

we couldnt beleave it when he told us, lol then next time he orderd some, we didnt bother cutting it up we just wraped it tite in clingfilm and pretended we were triying to give it to him without anyone seeing lol lots of bad words from him that day.

Use the same method. at a puppy class I had all the puppy's round me because of my treats. After a couple of weeks everybody was using liver.

If you're making dried liver, I find it easier to microwave it for a few minutes to cook it, then cut into tiny pieces and then put in the oven to bake until hard. That way you don't have to break it up when it's hard.

I'm in catering and make liver pate every week for local deli - I can make liver cake at the same time save stinking the kitchen out twice!
