Hi,

Does anyone know anyrhing about Cavapoo's? Do they have a similar temperament to Cockapoos?

Thanks
Julie

I have met one or two. They are a smaller dog. I suspect they might be a bit quieter as my cavalier had less personality than Dylan- sorry don't intend to be mean! Maybe a little more highly strung?? but I'm guessing.

I've never met a Cavapoo but imagine they'll be like small cockapoos to look at.

One thing I would say though is that there isn't really a cockapoo temperament.

Mine is lively, energetic, very attached to the whole family and loves all people and dogs, jumping up at everyone she meets and running enthusiastically to every dog she sees. Others can be calmer, quieter, shy, not keen on strange people, not keen on other dogs etc..

I would suggest you settle on a cross for size and some physical characteristics (although exactly how a puppy will turn out from a cross isn't that predictable) but select an individual puppy for temperament.

If you are quite clear about the temperament (outgoing, lively, calm, quiet etc) then you would need to wait until about 6 weeks before selecting a puppy so you can see what their temperament is like and also ask the breeder (who will know the puppies best) to help you choose one that is suitable.

Also you can't 'train out' temperament - no more than you can make a shy natured person outgoing and confident. The day we collected Flo she was bouncy around, wanting to get to all of us in the car, licking everyone, tail wagging furiously and not sleeping for the entire journey and she has been the same ever since. I have done a lot of training (1 to 2 sessions weekly since she was 12 weeks old) which has meant she is now well mannered and very controlled when asked but her underlying energy and enthusiasm for people, dogs (and agility equipment!!) is still there.

In general some might say a working cocker is high energy and drive while a show cocker is more laid back. That might work as a vague rule but I've meet working cockers who are high drive, working temperament and others who are quiet, shy and very reserved.

Looking up the Cavalier temperament they are described as "active and sporting. They have an instinct to chase most things that move including while on busy streets, and so most Cavaliers will never become "street-wise". As they tend to regard all strangers as friends, members of the breed will usually never make good guard dogs." Kind of sounds like my Flo!!!

We met a couple in the park a few weeks back and I agree they looked very similar to a cockapoo so were gorgeous. They were very laid back and great with my boys and if I hadn't already set my heart on a cockapoo I may have considered one. You may need to research it more but worth considering if you want a smaller dog.

Having watched that You Tube link posted here last week I would be quite concerned about a Cavapoo inheriting Syringomyelia.

I know a cavapoo - she is adorable with a lovely temperament, just like a smaller cockapoo. They have very pretty faces and feathery tails. I was going to get one but there are only a few around.

I also know a cavapoo. He is very small (smaller than his owner thought he would be - despite his dad being a miniature poodle), looks very like my Freddy, but he has been clipped short because he is so low to the ground, his long hair got really easily matted.

Temperament wise, he is very sweet, won't say boo to a goose and rolls straight onto his back for every dog he meets. He is a fast runner, but I wouldn't say he has masses of energy that needs to be run off every day.

Hope that helps x

Thank you so much for all your replies, I have decided on a cockapoo as I have 2 young playful kids and I'm a little worried the cavapoo may be a little delicate and run out of steam.

You have all been so helpful, I'm so glad I found this site.

Thanks

Hi Julie,

Good choice !

But remember that even Cockapoos can be very different to each other (as per various other threads / posts on here) - so finding the "right mix" that suits You and your lifestyle is an important decision - especially when cute ickle lovely puppies don't stay that ickle for long (sorry that is "little" for more grown-up members !) so bare in mind next year; the year after......and then a few more after that too xx

Oh yes two big litters of 9 each with some lovely golds. Gosh - imagine if Jukee Doodles's 10 girls all had 9 each that would be 90 puppies

We've just been thinking rather than inviting friends over for BBQ's this summer, we'll have to have 'Hug a Puppy' parties. Think we're going to get lots of new friends :)

I have a cavapoo girl who will be 2 next month.

She is just like my cockapoo really just a bit smaller and a bit more of a lap dog. However she is a feisty little diva whereas Monty is a big wuss.

Here they are at the end of their ball game if you want to see one in action :D
